Dymaxion Earth
alt text
3 versions of this projection of the world map - as an unfolded icosahedron, as a 'photographic' image and as a traditional map showing national borders
'The Dymaxion projection was created by American architect and inventor Buckminster Fuller in the mid-20th century. Unlike traditional maps, it unfolds Earth’s surface onto an icosahedron, a shape with twenty triangular faces, which can then be laid flat with minimal distortion of landmass size and shape.
'Fuller’s design emphasized the idea of a single interconnected planet. By arranging the continents as one nearly continuous landmass, the map visually downplays national divisions and highlights the unity of Earth’s geography. It avoids the east-west bias seen in most traditional projections, removing the notion of “up” or “down.”'
