I've been trolling around for another bass and found this one that ticked a lot of boxes: i love the Mosrite-like shape, it's lightweight, and it was cheap, so it'll be fun to tinker with.

This was a weird model for Danelectro, part of their short-lived Danoblaster series that featured a built-in effect circuit. For the bass, it's a chorus and it does sound pretty good, but it's a bit noisy. It's also weird in having pretty standard Precision bass-style pickups instead of the chrome lipstick pickups that are more typical Dano style.

This one has seen a lot of play but it's in good shape and clean. I'm planning to try another pickup in it, and maybe swap out the chorus board for a small overdrive or see if i can fit both with a different switch. To start I added a thin shim to the neck to bring the action down a bit, new strings, and a setup. Looking forward to trying it at practice tomorrow night.

this is a cool find!

i remember those danoblaster guitars and basses being in one of my hometown's guitar shops, and they were surprisingly fun to play. agree that those effects were kinda noisy circuits though.

I had one of the guitars and it weighed seventy-three pounds. It was cool that the effects were built in like an old Vox, tho.

Play it in good health!

Always wanted a Dano Longhorn. They were cheap, sound great and play great, and I'm not sure why I never got around to it. I mean, they're still available but currently not cheap.

@ardgedee I like the shape of the '59 and '63 basses, but the longhorn always looks unwieldy to me, though they do sound great.

@spingo Thanks! This bass is so light (compared to most basses) i'm surprised the guitars were that heavy.

@nikkuneko I might see if there's a way to rewire it to be quieter, or if it's just an artifact of that circuit. The chorus effect does sound good, so if i can't make it work on the bass maybe i'll see if it fits in a pedal enclosure instead.

Neat! Is it short scale?

For a picosecond I was happy you were happy about your new fish.

Kidding aside, that's purty.

@thelonius No, full 34" scale, which is a bonus because i prefer long scale but it seems like most of the funkier basses i like are short

@MackReed I'm all about that bass (i can't think of a fish that rhymes with treble)

@wjcstp It's been a very long time since I've played a longhorn but I recall it being surprisingly comfortable on the lap. It looks unwieldy but it's so light that it's easy to handle. What with the problems I have with full-size bass bodies now I'd have to try it again to see if I could still play one, but since I'm not in the market for another bass I won't be making an effort.

I've got a Longhorn and it's teeny and light and perfect.

What I really want is the Longhorn baritone tho. Tic-tac skadooliak!

I love the longhorns because they're like the dumbest ever.
