Far more than a generation. I think the more brutal separation and color coding we see in toys from the 1980s forward is part of the antifeminist backlash, but the societal prescriptions were already strong, otherwise it wouldn't have gone anywhere. After all, what a kid's jibblies are literally determines the range of their opportunities in life, still. I think society has to change before people stop caring about the language as much.
Incidentally, when it's available, I plan to change my gender indicator on my driver's license to nonbinary (our legislature just gave it the green light - not sure when it's being rolled out, though). One way we can reduce the value of the F/M binary is by opting out wherever possible.
