This is Molly

Molly is a 2-year old GSD we adopted from German Shepherd Rescue of Iowa (GSDRI.org). She was surrendered by a breeder in Oklahoma. She was not well taken care of. When the rescue got her she was covered in fleas and ticks and was scared of anything outside of her crate, including light. She wouldn't eat, drink, pee/poo, etc. if the lights were on. She was afraid of any sound. She did not enjoy the company of people. She is a very small GSD. Her growth was likely stunted by being bred too early. I think that probably preventer her from being bred again and led to her surrender. The wonderful foster who took her in worked pretty hard to build up Molly's trust enough to have her do things like come out of her crate, eat outside of the crate, eat with the lights on, go outside, and letting the foster and eventual others actually pet her without violently recoiling. When Molly moved in with us she had some regression the first few days. Last night she spent the entire evening in our living room with us alternating between pets from myself and the wife. I think she has accepted us (the kids included) as her people and is ok with her new home. She is still neurotic AF and we have some work to do together still, but I think she is a wonderful pup.

Long story short, fuck irresponsible breeders and the puppy mill culture. Support your local rescue organizations.

Sounds like what we went through with our rescue. She's come a long way and is so happy to be around us now, but some things are still a little bit of a struggle. I'm sure you'll do great with her!

I'm refusing to click the link so I can go on believing "GSD" stands for "German Shepherd Doggie"

Frickin' good work! I foster with my GF and man, reverse engineering what happened to them so you can try and fix it can be tough.

@spingo all the respect in the world to you guys. I’m sure you’ve seen some stuff. The wife and I want to foster when the kids get a bit bigger, but I am worried (secretly hoping) that every foster we take in would end up a foster fail and we’d end up with like 15 dogs.

@JBrianK The dogs have been pretty good with just a few pretty mild exceptions, but hearing where they came from has been really rough once or twice. The last one was just horrific and involved the woman getting arrested on 30 counts of animal abuse or something. She just lost it at some point.

If I had a house with a yard instead of a tiny apartment with a half-dirt back patio, I'd have more chance of failing! But as it is, I only really have the room/patience for one tinydog at a time. There's been a couple that really clicked and I came close, I'll admit.

@JBrianK Also, we're at like 15 dogs adopted--if I kept one, that screeches to a halt. You just want to keep the streak going, you now? I get a nice self-worth jolt from it.

You and @spingo are doing the lord's work. I mean, now that we own again instead of renting, we plan to head to a rescue soon and make a lucky kitty's life better, but to purposely seek out the traumatized ones, well, RESPEC'.
