Point Zero

Two elevated roads are seen from underneath on a brick or cobblestone bridge, with skyscrapers in the distance. A few people are walking on the bridge's sidewalk. Between the two elevated roads, an asymmetric pair of arms are mounted. Their intersection supports an elaborate metal lamppost.

"I visited a lamp post on a bridge in tokyo that has been used as the center point for distance measurements for centuries. In the 1960s they built an expressway over it but made sure to suspend a replica of that lamp post over precisely the same spot. It’s a totally gratuitous shrine to infrastructure and I love it"

More information on the Dorogenpyo (Zero Point), dating to 1605 and from which Japan's five major highways' mileposts are measured, at https://projectglobal.nl/13B. (The actual zero point is apparently the marker on the underneath of the lamppost.)

...does it bother anyone else that they didn't center the lamp post between the two expressways?

@bubbalumpkis Well, then the lamp would be in the wrong spot. (A better question is, could they have centered the two expressways around the lamp post?)

@bubbalumpkis Au contraire. That makes it more intrigueing.

@bezt That's what I meant - why couldn't they align the expressway so that the lamp post was in the center? Probably some prohibitive logistical / expense issue, but it just looks careless.
