2027 Slate Truck First Look: America's New Cheapest Pickup?

alt text
re: https://mltshp.com/p/1QZBY

A good review of this new truck and the ecosystem of customizations you can do with it, including kits from the factory and trim pieces you can 3d print yourself. I really like the size of it, it's easier to judge with someone standing next to it than just from measurements (though apparently the host is 6'10").

I love everything about this, from the crank windows to bluetooth physical buttons for screen functions, to the VW Beetle-like approach of making it a platform for a variety of vehicles. All cars today feel like overkill: too large, too many built-in luxuries that inflate the price, way more power than necessary. There's a real need for basic utilitarian transport, and i wish them the best to make this happen.

The limited range is a dealbreaker but otherwise yes this might be the most appealing American EV I've yet seen.

I want to go halvsies on one with someone else who also really just doesn't need a truck very much or very often.

@ardgedee the limited range is a draw for me, I don't need to go out of town.

I want to love it but look at bezos and fear another god tier pump and dump like Tesla is implementing right now

@urlnotfound It would be super cool to have something like this as a shared truck within a club or a neighborhood or just a group of friends. I could see our local EV car share getting a few of these.

Love this (although it'll be hard to go back to not having a rear-facing camera)

@frothywalrus Note that you can get an "extended battery pack" that gets the projected single charge up to 240 miles.

@frothywalrus Yeah, it's kind of tricky here... a day's drive can be a >100 mi circuit. Granted that's not likely to happen often (usually a multiple-stop all-day errand trip rather than one place 50 miles away) but as the area we live continues building outwards rather than upwards the places we need to go are going to get farther away, and since this is America the public transit option is effectively nonexistent. Even though I'd ditch my car with no regrets if I could bike safely to a commuter rail station.

LOL, the host in that video is 6'10"!?? No wonder it seemed weirdly undersized given the actual specs.

@ardgedee 150 would be the max for me, honestly I'll just borrow a car if I need to go out of town, or use my bus. @gwint I may have to go extended battery pack if the subwoofer drains the battery too fast.

@ardgedee I think about range a lot with the idea of getting an EV. Not anxiety, but what would really be required. It's rare that a day of driving errands around town would go over 100 miles, but add living in Minnesota and that range is effectively cut in half for 1/3 of the year.

I live on an island and never drive more than 50 miles a day (Probably more like 15, but let's pretend I am doing ALL THE ERRANDS), and I need a truck for my hobby farm/gardening projects on a weekly basis. This is perfect for that, and it's why I dropped the $50 to get in line. Hoping they pull it off.

looks exactly like a 1978 International Harvester Scout pickup! (not a bad thing!)

The only thing I don't like about this is...Bezos.

I also love that they said "f*ck-it, Apple and Google already figured out the software...let's just put a phone mount in it..." (Though a larger external screen for Airplay would have been nice but I bet there will be add-ons for that.)
homerj 3 weeks ago
@gwint there will be a rear-facing camera. It's required on US cars. Odds are it will be built into the rear mirror. (Unless, of course, Bezos bribes Trump to just executive order that away which...*sigh*...is plausible.)

re: my 2 cents on range. Our previous car got a bit over 200 which was good for 90% of what we did but the occasional road trip to Vancouver or the like things could get a little anxious. New car goes about 320 and that seems like a really nice sweet spot. More than enough for errand running all week. And for the extra-long trips, you just plan out a charging stop as you'd likely be stopping for gas/snack break anyways.

@homerj @gwint According to the video, the single display in front of the steering wheel switches to the backup camera when you're in reverse. https://www.youtube.com/watch...
