Can confirm. After spending my whole life in the northeast and Great Lakes regions, I moved to NC in my middle age and now I definitely have some local accent in my speech, to the amusement/annoyance of my sibs.
I spent a month in London once, and by the end of week one, I had adopted the accent and neologisms, and often ended opinions with "innit."
Hey, I know her! She's a reputable linguist. Google "accommodation theory" for more about what she's referring to.
As an Australian who lived briefly in the US, I deliberately made my accent more neutral for ease of communication. Probably not an issue for some, but I'm fully occa mate.
