I've seen them used commercially on citrus farms to light smudge pots (back in the 1980s.) I don't think they were particularly long-throw, however, so they might still be legal in CA. Though I don't know if any citrus growers use smudge pots for frost protection anymore, as they are pretty toxic, dangerous, and expensive to operate.
