Calgary Folk Fest: the artists were all fantastic. My health was still not great at this point, but having a weekend where the only thing I had to do was sit in the grass and listen to music was a healing experience. La Lom and Nick Shoulders in particular were really great live. Finally seeing Cake healed my inner child. They shot hot dogs at the crowd with a tshirt cannon.
Wilco: good show, but was at the Saddledome which is a shit venue - shaped like a saddle (duh) so everything echos horribly. Was debating even going but got some free tickets from a friend. Mixed feelings here.
The Descendants: blew my socks off. I've seen some other older punk bands and it's always been a subdued and kind of depressing affair, but not the case here, they still go so insanely hard. Lots of kids there ripping it up in the pit, which warmed my old heart. Best show of the year.
High On Fire: the venue here was a bar I used to work at which is pretty small (400 people max) and in a basement. Absolutely awesome to see Mike Ness and the gang in an small setting like that (I've seen Sleep a few times but only in bigger venues).
The Deep Dark Woods: I've seen these guys so many times over the years and they are always great. I don't think they're known much outside of Canada. Give them a listen if you're into dark, kinda weird, gloomy folk music.
Ben Caplan: listen, if you know you know. And if you don't, it's time to change that. Love him and the show was unreal.
