me disapproving of what Norway did to UTM zones

a simple map of northern europe including scandinavia. Overlaid are several vertical dotted lines at 6 degree intervals ... except one takes a bend to avoid clipping off the western end of norway. A flashing red "disapproval face" is situated right at the bend

everywhere else is happy with UTM zones slicing bits off the edges of their country ... except bloody Norway.

What are UTM projections used for? Weather and military applications?

@krebby I saw it used most in city-scale planning. It gives you a nice XY grid in metres, so local measurements with a tape measure work.

Of course, the USA had to be extra-cursèd about this, and produce some maps and surveys in UTMs but with US Survey Feet as the unit. Thankfully, US Survey Feet are officially dead … unless TFG decides to bring 'em back to Make America Wonky* Again.

*: as in "off", as used in AUS/NZ/UK, not as in studious (US)
