Van Eileen Eats

I just stumbled on this pic of local landmark, Van Eileen Eats burger spot.
She arrived here in 1950 as a caravan via a Mr. Bower and his mother, Eileen. Then in 1967 someone stuck a stick of gelignite under her and blew her up (I'll have to research why that happened). So they rebuilt her into this metal version and she stood there until 1998.
Pretty much everyone of a certain age in Perth has rolled through there for a hamburger or fillet steak burger (if you were posh). I fed there many times after a nearby surf.
Sadly as this area - Cottesloe - built up, the council wanted it gone (rumour has it that a councillor lived across the road and didn't like the late night crowds). So they increased the rent massively and eventually shut her down as she no longer met health regulations.
A Perth/Cottesloe icon, sadly missed
