I had a good buddy who was also a climber. After some relative died he inherited a bunch of hunting trophies, among which for some reason were some stuffed bear paws. One thing bears like to do is scratch and bite trees - but they'll use the same tree over and over as a kind of scent marking. So my buddy liked to find hunting camps in the backwoods (like horse/hike in only) and climb up a tree that the deer hanging pole was attached to (so it'd be noticed). . . then just go to town with the bear claws. And he would do it right before hunting season. So these hunters would arrive a few days later and it'd look like there were *very* fresh claw marks from a bear (normal) but 10-15 feet off the ground (definitely not normal unless a bear was standing on a snowbank, which does happen). He was quite fond of doing that in grizz country and I'm sure he made some hunters pretty goddamn nervous.
We thought it was hilarious. Those were simpler times.
