if you were looking for a hellscape diversion from the hellscape: fallout community edition

four-panel collage of screenshots: interplay's 1997 title "fallout: a post-nuclear role playing game" is shown running on MacOS. from top to bottom: 1) the title screen, which shows the menacing atompunk-meets medieval power armor helmet and a ruined cityscape, with the menu items displayed as mechanical push-button items on a steel console panel (intro, new game, load game, credits, exit); 2) the character creation page, showing the SPECIAL character traits, skills and optional traits 3) an animated segment from the initial conversation with the overseer, showing a clunky vacuum tube device called "the water chip" over a circuit blueprint; 4) the isometric playfield, featuring the main character in his skin-tight lightning blue jumpsuit, walking through the early settlement of shady sands.
i hadn't played this ("fallout: a post-nuclear role playing game", 1997) in some years, and unfortunately hadn't had access to a PC to unpack the game assets. recently realized i could use a couple of neat tools to unpack it and play it on my mac.
"fallout community edition" is a nice re-implementation of a (later, patched, more stable) build of the original game that will work on apple silicon chips, as well as windows and linux. you bring your executable from steam or GOG, it lets the app run for you.
it's still a devilishly fun game, and devilishly difficult at times. trying to enjoy it a chunk at a time and not worry about getting each beat of the game "right".

if you're unpacking assets from the GOG build of the game, you can use this tool:

(and in case it DOES work, it looks like they also did a similar project for fallout 2! https://github.com/alexbata...)
