A real space cowboy. His book, Leap Of Faith, is quite a read.

Gordon Cooper's Manual Reentry Saved Faith 7 Mission
On May 16, 1963, during NASA's final Mercury mission, a short circuit knocked out Gordon Cooper's automatic controls just before reentry. He calmly drew horizon lines on his window, memorized constellations, and used a countdown from John Glenn to time the retrorockets perfectly. Faith 7 splashed down only four miles from the recovery ship—NASA's most precise Mercury landing. The story from Cooper's memoir highlights human skill outshining failed tech, earning praise as a lesson in grit.
