@mare metal chain mail gloves wouldn't be a bad idea, particularly since I was an improbable survivor of a chainsaw accident.

The trick is to leave a square post at an uninteresting side eg the back of your piece that you clamp the handscrew on for better and safer manipulation. When the piece is almost finished you cut off the post and carefully finish the last part. I’ve never used this method with woodcarving but have while shaping other small pieces with power tools. I still have 8 fingers and two thumbs. Lee Valley also sells very grippy gloves especially made for woodcarving. I found that a canvas bag filled with sand can also be useful.
