Two “Sad Sack” comic books held in my hand in front of a white tile wall
My great grandmother bought a Li’l cottage on Lake Superior decades ago (mid 1950’s, before the Mackinac Bridge was built). Nowadays most of the family is either too old to want to schlep way up to it for a vacation or just don’t want to deal with the drive with their young family, so since my grandparents passed, my uncle is selling it.
But going there on vacation every year growing up, I loved that they had an old box of comics from when my dad & his siblings grew up going there - mostly old Archie & these Sad Sack. I’ve quoted these since I was a kid and obviously nobody had ANY idea what I was talking about (“the message said trucks lined with bagels!”).
My uncle saved these for me and I just got them in the mail. They smell musty and the content is pretty outrageous in places against current standards, but some great memories and nostalgia nonetheless. ❤️

What I love about Sad Sack is that the full phrase to complete his name (and this was clearly understood at the time, especially among military folk), is "of shit"
