The Miracle Amaryllis
alt text
Way back in December of 2023 my neighbor's gave us a waxed amaryllis bulb. It was beautiful, and it bloomed for weeks and weeks and then, around the time most folks probably would've composted it, I tore off all the wax and popped it into a big empty pantry by my front door. I never bothered to check what conditions these flowers need to thrive (spoiler: not Seattle). I just planted it, gave it one good drink, and left it.
It grew leaves, which got a bit beat up during the dead of winter, but it survived, and I was glad and figured that was it. And then, about two weeks ago, hints of blooms showed up. Today there are three huge flowers fully opened, a fourth that should be open by Sunday, and what looks like at least two more threatening to come later.
You've got guts, amaryllis, I'll give you that.
