3D printed zori: DONE!

Sooo... I didn't like a few details of the sandal sole that I downloaded. The rear strap holes were too close together, and the wells for the straps were too shallow and conical in a weird way that kept me from attaching the straps the way I wanted to, SO...

I spent a day teaching myself Autodesk Fusion in order to model my own version of the soles so I could adjust them to my own tastes. Autodesk Fusion is TERRIBLE. It likes to make things disappear unexpectedly, and there can be unpredictable side effects whenever you press a button. It's like mystery meat navigation, except that the navigation interferes with your history, so you can't even go back to the page you can from properly. So the day spent learning it was mostly spent screaming "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT??" at the computer.

But anyway, my girlfriend showed me how to sew my own straps out of a cheap fake-velvet material, which was a LOT more fun, and now part of me wants a sewing machine of my very own. TPU also makes for terrible traction, so I cut out treads and glued them to the 3D printed sole so I wouldn't, um, die.

So yeah! I 3D printed my own footwear! Except for the parts made out of a bunch of other materials. And really, making all the other parts by hand was the most fun I've had in awhile. The real world rules y'all!

Cool!

I only wish I could muster the energy.

If you have any experience using a graphic design program then try to clean CAD, every bit of logic and muscle memory will work against you because they work in entirely different ways. Cool project, and if you have the itch to sew more I’d say dive right in, it’s a super satisfying hobby.

If you have a bit of a programming mindset, OpenSCAD is usually much less frustrating than dealing with the UI quirks of the graphical editors. And the BOSL2 package for it adds a lot of useful primitives.

It has been neat following your process photos and description for these sandals. They're awesome. I highly recommend learning how to do some basic sewing. It's a super fun and useful skillset.
