Concorde @ Tullamarine

alt text
The Concorde at Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne Australia9th August 1975. It had just done a 3 hour 37 minute flight from Singapore (7 hours 50 minutes normal flight time today).

The Concorde only ever came to Australia on 3 or so occasions for promotional visits. They lacked the fuel capacity to make the extreme long-haul distance non-stop without numerous refueling stops.

The Concorde was one of those 20th century things that looked really cool, held the promise of an amazing future, and in hindsight was actually pretty worthless and astonishingly wasteful.

In the late 70’s me and my friends would watch it as it passed over the town we grew up in on Long Island.

I got to sit in the pilot's seat once. A guy I knew worked as an immigrations officer at La Guardia. It was pretty amazing.
