We built the library, someone else started charging admission

Screenshot of a tweet from Suraj Sharma saying, "Bro I'm so sick of pretending this isn't weird. The internet spent 20 years creating tutorials, open-source projects, blog posts & answers for free. Al companies turned all of it into products worth billions. And now the same people who created that knowledge are being told they're replaceable. We built the library. Someone else started charging admission." To which another person "fractally" replied (on Tumblr), "This has been my main argument against "Al" from the very beginning. OpenAl scraped the entire web. All of which had been a labor of love from humans. Wikipedia is the backbone of a lot of LLMs, and that was volunteer human labor. They stole it and now they're selling it back to us. And worse, they're trying to destroy the free sources that they stole from. It's destruction of human knowledge on an unprecedented scale. The burning of the library of Alexandria has nothing on this."

Insert a comment here about my personal dislike of screenshots of screenshots of social media posts on other social media sites, but I thought this was a lucid point worth sharing.

The machines and processes of the industrial revolution were powered by the forests and swamps of the Carboniferous period, which left deposits of coal for later exploitation. LLMs are powered by deposits of human ingenuity and ordered knowledge, and presently run in a way that inhibits and contaminates the renewal of those resources.

The worthless business assets must be converted into valuable capital for discretionary bonuses as quickly as possible.

The MBA was the worst thing to happen to business.
