Last time I ever used one was in college in the early 80s, making copies of an exam for a prof. It was a big deal when we got a photocopier for the department where I had my work-study, and you had to use one of those key-counters to track how many copies you made for billing.
I was a teacher's pet in 3rd & 4th grade, I used to get picked to run this machine to print out our quizzes. Always felt slightly loopy when I came back to class
@BMK I discovered while working on my thesis that I could use the microfiche printers in the library to print out stills of b&w film to give it a super great xerography look. but at $0.15c per frame, it was pricey. Fortunately, at one point during a print, I bumped the key counter and dislodged it. I found, to my amazement, that first the printer queried that there was a key counter there, made the copy, and THEN incremented the counter.
so, press the button, watch the light start moving, pull the counter, advance to next frame of film, insert counter. and suddenly I was only paying $0.01/frame because I didn't want to walk out with a stack of copies and say I owed nothing, as it would be too suspicious.
