on this day (minus one day) in 1982: the sony CDP-101

japanese language ad for the first commercially-available compact disc player, the sony CDP-101. catalog shot of the large, rectangular CD deck, with dark walnut wood accents on the top. atop the deck are a pair of headphones. the CD tray is open, with a disc sitting in it. to the lower left of the deck is the rather chunky remote. to the lower right it reads "DIGITAL CDP-101"

@ardgedee man, that is truly wild to think about. i had to look and US median (household!) income in 1982 was $23430, or ~$1950 a month.

*of course, i can't talk, but, dang.

oh man, the sony cd-lift/eject system left so much to be desired, the three little felt-covered pins that rose up to lift the disc, that would sometimes jam in their housing, preventing the tray from ejecting. and they would rise before the disc had stopped spinning, so if you had any dirt on them at all, it would scratch the disc.

anyway, yay for cd players. I got my first (cdp-25) four years later in 1986
