The Dr. Pete Larson Group s/t
alt text
Painting of a dark robed figure sitting at the foot of a cliff. Behind them is a bright white light highlighting the undersides of the branches behind them. The figure is hunched over and plucking the strings of a nyatiti, while a stream of snakes surge from behind them across the bottom of the painting. (A nyatiti is a lute with a gourd at the base, from which eight or nine strings extend.)

Dr. Pete is cofounder of Bulb Records, a legendary '90s record label that released some of the first recordings by Wolf Eyes and Andrew W.K. And he's also an epidemiologist who regularly does fieldwork in Kenya.
His latest musical project is a massive fusion of postrock, Sabbath grind, and shifting rhythms, featuring himself on the nyatiti, the Kenyan lute-like instrument the figure in that painting is casting snakes from.
It's dark and dense all somehow without feeling overwrought or gothy. I was in a constant state of "whoa..." on my first listen.
