Just after World War II ended, by dad was an MP in Italy. One of his jobs was to stand at guard at various spots on the tower. Mostly this was to keep American soldiers from doing not-so-nice touristy stuff at night.
Empty threats, so far. They should offer the Nobel Prize for Engineering, to whomever successfully brings it back to level. Too beautiful to leave in such disarray.

There was a suggestion once to do something but I don't know if anything came of it. Italy is a different country, in many ways.
IIRC they did some correction a few decades ago actually straitening it slightly and preventing future tilting. I think part of the argument for not fully straightening it was simply that it'd no longer be the leaning tower then.
