A 3 by 3 grid of albums that have influenced me and maybe mark the different styles of music I listen to based on the first album I heard in that genre.

- Repeater, by Fugazi
- Endtroducing..., by DJ Shadow
- Tortoise's self-titled first album
- Ragin' Full On, by fIREHOSE
- Sheik Yerbouti, by Frank Zappa
- Rock for Light, by Bad Brains
- Brilliant Corners, by Thelonious Monk

All of these are primarily the first album I heard of an artist I still listen to today and styles or genres I really branched off from.
Sheik Yerbouti isn't that great of a Zappa album, but it was the first one of his I bought and heard. He has some amazing music here and there, but some has maybe not survived recent listens.
If there was a 10th spot, it'd probably go to Sleep's "Dopesmoker" as in recent years the droning stoner/doom metal bands have come into repeated rotation. The 11th spot would probably go to someone like Aphex Twin or Squarepusher, though I don't listen to as much electronic music these days.
