"Everything is about a negotiation and trying to figure out what is worth it. Certainly, now, licensing is a huge part of the way musicians make their money, right? People feel like they’re forced into having to license their music for whatever. My feeling has always been the same: do whatever the fuck you want! I don’t give a fuck. But the idea that there’s no exchange happening, that is bullshit. For most people now, if Apple wants to use your music, you’re doing little flips in the air with joy, how happy you are to be associated with this thing. But that’s an exchange, and what you’ve done with your music is not without valence or without impact about what your music feels like and becomes. I understand why people make their decisions. I don’t judge it. We do plenty of things to make our music accessible to people that might feel compromising to me in some way – I hate algorithmic nonsense but our music is in that gross soup. And you can’t pretend that there’s not an exchange or that there’s not something resulting from it. It’s always irritated me that people think there’s something holier than thou about the idea of having…integrity is such a stupid word, but just having a code or a way of structuring your life that’s not solely based on a profit motive. There has to be some room for that, because otherwise, what is there?"
