@ardgedee yeah, my mum knew it well. She had two kids learn to drive in her Volvo 345, and we went through two driveshafts and two clutches.
(from what I remember, the 345 was an odd DAF-derived design that had the gearbox and clutch just in front of the rear differential)
Since most cars in the UK were manual, you had to learn in a manual unless you were going for the simpler automatic-only licence
